Can I get in trouble at work for this?

Ok..kind of a complicated question here..i work in a nursing home and my best friend, also a family friend works there as well. we are both cnas, and a close relative of hers was resident there. Well today that family relative passed away. They notified only one member of the family, (my bff was not working today) and the family member they did notify wouldn't have told her and her other side of the family of the relatives passing away due to as feeling as though they didn't want to be the bearer of bad news. As her best friend, after a hour of the relative passing away i told her myself due to her not knowing, so she was able to come and give her final good byes. my bff didn't want me to leave her side and was happy to that she heard it from me and no one else. some one told me that by doing this this was a hippa violation. Her other family members are in no way upset and were glad i told them due to the family member the facility notified had not even told them. Will i get in trouble for this?
